Packing Companions- The Llamas' centuries-old ability as a beast of burden has been rediscovered by hikers, hunters and forest work crews in North America. Their hardiness, sure-footedness and common sense make them an excellent commercial pack animal and trail companion particularly in terrain that would be difficult or impossible for traditional pack animals. With their padded feet and ability to browse, Llamas are "environmentally friendly" and have minimal impact on the back-country. Males are most commonly used and, depending on maturity, weight and condition, will carry 50-100 pound packs 10-15 miles a day.
Commercial Llama packing has an excellent future with the growing number of people wanting to experience the outdoors. By helping with the load, Llamas can open up the wilderness to day-long treks or overnight camping for those whose fitness may prevent them from carrying their own equipment.

Fibre  Llamas have soft, fine fibre with remarkable warmth and insulating qualities. Llama fibre has a tensile strength and durability, three times stronger than a wool strand. Shearing every other year will produce an oil-free fleece weighing 2-10 pounds with a fibre length of 4-7 inches. The characteristics of Llama fibre make it cherished by spinners and weavers alike and assure a steady demand in the future and the prospect for developing a cottage industry is very promising.

Show and Competition- The establishment of the Alpaca & Llama Show Association (ALAS) some years ago and the popularity of Llamas have led to a growing number of Llama shows across North America. Llamas are judged very similarly to other livestock and classes offered include Halter, Driving, Pack Llama , Obstacle as well as Showmanship Showing an animal brings a lot of personal satisfaction and,  if you place well your investment may gain even more in value.
